Lawrence and Marilyn Matteson Scholarship I

Amount: 12 scholarships of up to $2,000 each

Renewable: Yes, for one additional year.
Need-based: Yes.
Special Deadline: April 1, 2017

Requirements and selection criteria:

  • Scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors and high school graduates pursuing studies in health sciences, technology or trades.
  • Adult applicants must live within the following school district areas and eligible high school seniors must attend the following high schools: Central Lee, Danville, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Mediapolis, Mount Pleasant, New London, Waco, Wapello, and Winfield, or be home-schooled and living in any of these school districts.
  • Applicants must have at least a 2.0 GPA but not more than a 3.5 GPA. (GPAs of more than 3.5 are allowed, if necessary, to award sufficient scholarships under this program.
  • Selection criteria include financial need, personal character, and career goals, evaluated by a written essay, school activities, community and personal activities, and work experience.
  • Preference will be given to students seeking a two-year degree or completion of a certificate program in one of these areas.
  • Consideration will also be given to students who are seeking a four-year degree in the same fields.


Lawrence and Marilyn Matteson Scholarship II

Amount: 4 scholarships of up to $4,000 each.
Renewable: Yes, for one additional year.
Need-based: Yes.
Special Deadline: April 1, 2017

Requirements and selection criteria:

  • Scholarships will be awarded to students who received two years of support from the Lawrence and Marilyn Matteson Scholarship I or the L.W. Matteson Scholarship for Southeastern Community College, and who intend to continue their education at a college or university for the third and fourth year of higher education.
  • The continuation of study must be in health sciences, technology or the trades, including (but not limited to) Engineering, Nursing, Medicine, or Agriculture.
  • Applicants must have successfully completed a two-year program or made satisfactory academic progress during their first two years of college. Strong preference will be given to applicants whose GPA in the first two years of college was at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
  • Moderate financial need will be one criteria (50%) for the scholarship. The other 50% will be determined by personal character and career goals as demonstrated by an essay, school activities, community and personal activities, and work experience.


Lt. Col. William T. Cooper Medical Scholarship

Amount: $1,000
Renewable: No.
Need-based: Yes.
Deadline: April 1, 2017

Requirements and selection criteria:

  • Applicant must be a graduating senior attending Fort Madison Senior High School or Holy Trinity Catholic High School.
  • Applicant must intend to pursue a career in the medical field. This includes but is not limited to doctor, nurse, technician, and research.
  • Applicant must attend an educational institution with a curriculum leading to a bachelors degree, associates degree, technical degree, professional certification, professional registration, or licensure.
  • Selection criteria include financial need, academics based on GPA and transcript, and character based on extracurricular activities, community and personal activities, and letters of recommendation.


Lt. Col. William T. Cooper Citizenship Scholarship

Amount: $1,000
Renewable: No.
Need-based: Yes.
Deadline: April 1, 2017

Requirements and selection criteria:

  • Applicant must be a graduating senior attending Fort Madison Senior High School or Holy Trinity Catholic High School.
  • Applicant must exemplify good citizenship based upon his or her involvement and reputation in school, community, and church, or other activity assisting others and/or bettering the community.
  • Applicant must possess strong leadership ability and have participated in their school’s extracurricular activities.
  • Applicant must attend an educational institution with a curriculum leading to a bachelors degree, associates degree, technical degree, professional certification, professional registration, or licensure.
  • Selection criteria include financial need, potential, and academics based on GPA and transcript, and character based on extracurricular activities, community and personal activities, and letters of recommendation.
