Meet the Staff
Susan Skora, President & CEO
Susan has a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Illinois-Chicago, and a law degree from IIT/Chicago-Kent College of Law. She had 10 years of experience in fundraising management, and 20 years of experience in finance and investments prior to becoming president of the Community Foundation in 2004. She served on the Foundation’s Board of Directors for 10 years, and was board chair prior to joining our staff. She is a member of the Quad-City Estate Planning Council, and former president and member of the Quad-City Planned Giving Council. She lives in DeWitt, Iowa, with her husband. Contact Susan by:

Barbara Melbourne, Vice President of Development
Barbara has a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Creighton University, and a law degree from the University of Kansas School of Law. She had 21 years of planned and major gift experience in higher education and in social services before joining the Community Foundation staff in 2006. She is a member and former president of the Quad City Planned Giving Council, Leave a Legacy Program chair, and a member of the Quad City Estate Planning Council. Kathy Graves, Vice President of Finance and Administration
Kathy has a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from St. Ambrose University, and was awarded her CPA designation. She spent two years in public accounting, four years in the private sector, and five years working for nonprofit organizations before joining the Community Foundation in 1999. Matt Mendenhall, Vice President of Programs
Matt is a graduate of Cornell College, has a MSW degree from St. Ambrose University and a Ph.D. from the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University. Matt had 19 years of experience in nonprofit organizations before joining the Community Foundation in 2007.

Hannah Morrell, Director of Administration and Donor Services
Hannah has a bachelor’s degree in English with minors in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of Iowa. She had one year of experience with a non-profit organization, before joining the Community Foundation in 2005. She is a member of the Quad City Association of Fundraising Professionals. She lives in DeWitt, Iowa, with her husband.

Ken Gullette, Director of Communications
Ken is a Certified Guerrilla Marketing Coach who has worked in in the news industry, PR and media relations. He was a reporter, anchor, producer, and news director in radio and TV for 22 years, transitioned into public relations at a Quad Cities ad agency, then served as the national Media Relations Director for the college testing company ACT, based in Iowa City. Ken is also the owner/instructor of an online kung-fu school with members worldwide. He teaches and produces instructional kung-fu DVDs. Contact Ken by:

Al Zwilling, Director of Affiliate Development
Al has a bachelor's and master's degree in Education from the University of Illinois. He is also a doctoral candidate in Human Resources Education at the U of I. He has two years of teaching experience and 29 years of work with a university in human resource, fiscal and project development and management. Cheryl Narby, Accounting Associate
Cheryl had 28 years of experience in accounting, scheduling, and customer service, and worked for a corrugated box manufacturer and owner of a home building company prior to joining the Foundation in March of 2009. She is currently attending Scott Community College. She lives in Davenport, Iowa, and has three children.

Marcia Meinert, Accounting Associate
Marcia has an associate’s degree in Business Administration from Scott Community College. She has 20 years of experience in healthcare administration, human resources, benefits and finance, serving as the administrator for two large healthcare organizations before joining the Community Foundation in 2006. Lindsey Wheeler, Business Operations Associate
Lindsey earned a BA degree in Mass Communications and Public Relations and a minor in Marketing from Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon, WI. Carrie Dearborn, Development Associate

Nicole Freise, Program Associate
Nicole has a bachelor's degree in Public Relations with a concentration in Music from Drake University. For two years, she served as the Community Foundation's Youth Initiatives Advocate through the AmeriCorps State of Promise (IASoP) Program before joining the staff in April 2011. In June 2011, she received an Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award for her service to the Foundation through AmeriCorps.

Jim Horstmann, Legacy Director
Jim has bachelor’s degree in accounting from Augustana College and is a CPA in Illinois and Wisconsin. After serving in the United States Navy, Jim worked as a public accountant for six years and then became the CFO for retail department and discount stores in the Midwest for the next 22 years. He joined Augustana College in 1983, where he served as Vice President for Development and Director of Planned Giving. Since his retirement in 2003, Jim has served as a volunteer board member for numerous Quad City area nonprofits. He is a member of the Quad City Estate Planning Council and the Financial Executives Institute.

Marlin 'Hap' Volz, Trusts and Estates Senior Consultant
Hap is a graduate of Duke University and the Duke University School of Law. He retired in 2009 after serving more than 40 years as a trust officer and the Senior Vice President of Wells Fargo Bank. Hap sits on the board of H.E.L.P. Legal Assistance as Vice President and is serving his third term as a member of the Council of the Probate and Trust Law section of the Iowa Bar Association. Hap was the first recipient of the Outstanding Planning Giving Professional Award, and is the past president of the Quad City Estate Planning Council and the Quad City Planned Giving Council. He currently is Chair of the Davenport Legacy Foundation, one of our affiliates.

Dick Kleine, Director of Corporate Relations
A retired vice president at Deere and Company, Dick is active as a volunteer and philanthropist. He has been deeply involved in the Community Foundation for years, as a Board member, Board Chair, donor, and a member of our Legacy Society. He was one of the community leaders who helped launch the Achieve Quad Cities program. Now, in his volunteer position, he speaks to corporate leaders and individuals about the importance of giving back and establishing a legacy.

Susan Parker, AmeriCorps Youth Advocate
Susan brings a variety of experience to the Community Foundation. In addition to being a Certified Nursing Assistant, she is studying for a Medical Assisting Degree and plans to graduate in February, 2012. Susan has also worked as a HUD counselor, negotiating with banks and lending companies on behalf of people facing home foreclosures. She is the mother of five, a proud football mom, and grandmother of two. She will work closely with the Teens for Tomorrow program and other youth activities.

Maryfrances Swartout, Affiliate Development Assistant, VISTA Member
Maryfrances has experience in retail, customer service, and nonprofit organizations. She graduated from Capri College in 2007 and is an Iowa Licensed Cosmetologist. Maryfrances also spends time volunteering for the Girl Scouts of Eastern IA and Western IL as a troop leader in Walcott and at Camp Conestoga. She has also been pursuing an Associate's Degree at Scott Community College.

Brady Frieden, Teens for Tomorrow Student Director
Brady is a student at St. Ambrose University, majoring in Secondary Education and Biology. He was first involved in Teens for Tomorrow when he was a student at Assumption High School, where he had a 4.0 GPA and was Captain of the varsity football team and a member of the Academic Honor Roll. After taking a couple of years off, he returned to T4T and took over the Student Director role in June, 2011. Contact Brady by:
