Friends of the Windmill Endowment

History
In the summer of 1998, the construction of an authentic Dutch windmill in Fulton was about to be scrapped by the City Council because of a shortfall of funds.  Two individuals volunteered to raise the remaining funds. Engraved bricks to be used in a walkway near the mill were sold and donations were solicited from individuals and businesses in the area.  At the same time, the vision of a Friends of the Windmill (FOW) organization began to take shape--not only to make the windmill a reality, but to provide ongoing support for it as well.

After construction of the mill began, it became apparent that volunteers would be needed to give information to visitors and FOW assumed the responsibility for recruiting, training, and scheduling about 100 volunteers annually who not only give information but who staff the gift shop.

Purpose
This Friends of the Windmill Endowment is one piece of the finances needed to actively promote Fulton's Dutch heritage and maintain and improve the tourist attractions in the windmill area.  This fund provides permanent assistance toward the annual expenses in fulfilling FOW's mission.  This fund is not designed as a short-term repository for capital campaign funds.  Please contact FOW for assistance if you wish to make a donation toward a major capital project (for instance, FOW has had a vision, pre-dating the cultural center, for a tax house within the windmill area and has architectural plans for that potential future addition).

Impact
Friends of the Windmill provided money toward the purchase of the property for the Windmill Cultural Center and for its construction, being the major fund raiser for the project.  FOW operates the gift shop in the cultural center and trains and staffs the volunteers who greet visitors, staff the gift shop, and help guide the thousands of visitors from all over the world who visit the windmill area every year.
