Service to America and the QC Area

Thomas Nobis spent most of his life living in and serving the Quad City area. He was born in Davenport and graduated from Davenport High School in 1939. Thomas was awarded the McMullen Scholarship to attend Cornell University in New York, where he received a degree with distinction in civil engineering.

After college, Thomas was an officer in the United States Navy and served as a Sea Bee for two and a half years during World War II. When his service was up, he returned to Davenport where he became a dedicated community activist. Upon his father’s death in 1965, Thomas became president of Central Engineering Co.

Thomas spent many years donating his time and talents to local organizations. It was his giving spirit that led Thomas to establish a charitable gift annuity at the Community Foundation. The annuity provided him with a source of income; at the same time it also created a lasting impact on the community.

"The Community Foundation gave me the opportunity to give to the most people possible."
