Mendenhall Family Foundation Fund

Matt & Marcy Mendenhall know firsthand the needs in the Quad City community as both work for non-profits and give back to our region every day. But they wanted to do more. Sharing a desire to make a difference in the Quad Cities, they carefully considered how they could make the greatest impact and fulfill their philanthropic goals.

“Partnering with the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend by creating a charitable fund, makes us feel like we are part of a bigger effort, with other people, coming together to make things better in the community where we live,” said Matt Mendenhall.  “It’s great to give back to the community and know that we are part of a long tradition through the Community Foundation,” adds Marcy Mendenhall.

With several options available through the Community Foundation, Matt and Marcy ultimately chose to create a Donor Advised Fund. Other fund options were considered, but this was the best fit for them as a family, providing them an opportunity to make their own recommendations on charitable giving to causes that matter to them.

Creating the Mendenhall Family Foundation over a period of time worked best for them financially, investing periodically rather than investing one lump sum gave Matt and Marcy the ability to plan their future and maintain their existing lifestyle.  Starting initially with an Acorn Fund, they could “grow” their fund by adding money gradually over time.  Two years later, their Acorn Fund had matured and was then converted to the Donor Advised Fund.

Having a Donor Advised Fund at the CFGRB has given the Mendenhall’s time for meaningful conversations about where their charitable contributions are made as a family, ensuring they are supporting programs that add value to their community.  Matt and Marcy’s annual contributions support organizations that are dear to them, including the Bettendorf Schools Fine Arts Boosters, where their daughters are involved in the band program.

“When you get to the phase in your life when it’s time to return, the Community Foundation can help you return not only treasure, but also some of your time and talent to the community.”
