Just Kids Early Care and Education Endowment

Just Kids, established in 1976, is a nationally accredited, non-profit United Way of the Quad Cities partner agency. They provide affordable quality care and education to families from the Quad City area and outlying communities. Along with providing affordable education, the mission of Just Kids also sets out to increase the public’s awareness of the importance of early childhood experiences, and their impact on children’s later success in life.

Just Kids helps instill a lifelong love of learning in children by utilizing established curriculum tools within the programs the organization provides. They have three main programs of learning in which the children are involved: The Work Sampling System, the Creative Curriculum and Project Approach.

The Work Sampling System is an assessment used to identify children’s skills, knowledge, behavior, and accomplishments across different curriculum areas. The teachers at use the system to assess each child’s personal and social development, language and literacy, mathematical thinking, scientific thinking, social studies, physical development and the arts.

The Creative Curriculum is built on the idea that children learn through hands-on experiences. This curriculum helps children become independent, self-confident, inquisitive, and enthusiastic learners by exploring their environment. The curriculum also helps the teacher understand each child’s unique abilities, interests, and needs in order to help them capitalize on them.

Project Approach is a method of covering curriculum content while encouraging children to develop their skills as scientists and explorers. Project Approach promotes enthusiasm for learning as children set out to uncover answers to questions about a specific topic through research, fieldwork, and interviews with experts. Children record their experiences with notes, sketches, photographs, and video recording. The documentation of their experiences is then transformed into books, murals, artwork, constructions, and journals.
