Herman and Sarah Segal Scholarship

Herman and Sarah Segal Scholarship by the Stroud/Segal Families

Furthuring the Education of Rock Island Students

The families of Judi and Donn Stroud and Randi and Gary Segal are pleased to have established this scholarship fund in honor of their parents, Herman and Sarah Segal. The Herman and Sarah Segal Scholarship Fund is meant to further the education of Rock Island High School students. The Stroud and Segal families recognize the importance of a good education and want to give the young people of Rock Island County an opportunity to make a positive impact in the community.

The late Sarah Gurewitz Segal was a 1932 graduate of Rock Island High School and attended Northwestern University. She was the first president of Rock Island Little League Baseball (American League). She was a member of many charitable and religious organizations in the community. Sarah died at a rather early age in January 1960. Her caring for others was certainly a trademark of her short but meaningful life.

Herman Segal graduated from South Philadelphia High School in Philadelphia, PA. After serving as an officer in the United States Army in the Pacific during World War II, the Segals settled in Rock Island where Herman established Herman's, Inc., a wholesale apparel company that is still in existence, serving retailers throughout the United States. Herman was a past board member of the Davenport YMCA, the Tri City Jewish Center, the Rock Island Hebrew Cemetery Association, and the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities. He is a current member of the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club.

The Segal and Stroud families have been involved in the Rock Island school system for many years. Judi Stroud attended Rock Island High School and graduated from Lindenwood College. Randi Segal also graduated from Rock Island High School and from Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science in 1966. Randi is a substitute teacher at Horace Mann Choice Elementary School and is on the Executive Board at the school. The Stroud and Segal grandchildren have attended Rock Island High School as well.

The Segal and Stroud families, while stressing education, have also been active in various civic and charitable organizations including Junior League, M.A.D.D., Quad Cities Botanical Center, Quad City Music Guild, Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities and the Quad City Symphony.

The Herman and Sara Segal Scholarship fund was created to honor the life and the memory of two caring individuals who loved their community. The Stroud and Segal families felt establishing a scholarship fund would carry on the legacy of their parents in perpetuity. They also felt this fund would impact the lives of many area youth and their hope is for students to have a chance to better themselves.

"The Endow Iowa Tax Credit was the perfect way to create a fund while taking advantage of the state tax credit.
