Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities Fund


Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities (HFHQC) is the local bi-state affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, an ecumenical Christian housing organization that works in partnership with God and people from all walks of life to build simple, decent, affordable homes for low income families in need.

Each home built in the Quad Cities currently costs about $70,000 to construct. Most are three bedroom, one bathroom and approximately 1,040 square feet. The price is kept low through donated and/or discounted building materials and volunteer labor. Homes are funded by churches/faith communities, individuals, foundations, grants, corporations, businesses, and other community groups. HFHQC activities are governed by a local, elected Board of Directors, which oversees the work of seven volunteer committees. The affiliate is staffed by an Executive Director and four other full time employees.

HFHQC was organized in 1993 by a group of volunteers who assisted with the rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Andrew. By the end of 2008, 56 homes had been built and sold to low income families with a 1% down payment and no-interest mortgage. To qualify, families must need adequate shelter, must meet income requirements in order to pay a mortgage, and must be willing to partner with Habitat by contributing 250 hours of “sweat equity” per adult member toward the construction of their own and other Habitat homes. Families also complete a series of homeownership classes, covering topics such as financial management, budgeting, and conflict resolution. “Sweat equity”, along with the homeowner classes, is a cornerstone of the program, which prides itself on giving QuadCity families a “hand up, not a hand out”.
